Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore [Video] Hike-In SUP Camping

A Spectacular Paddle

Miles of colorful sandstone cliffs 50-200 feet high rise above clear turquoise water. I felt like I was in paradise.

After hiking Pictured Rocks for over 30 years I finally take my first paddleboard tour of the amazing cliffs.

This was a two night backcountry camping trip at Mosquito Campground. It was scheduled for three nights with the middle night at Chapel Beach. But a storm swept through Lake Superior. Mosquito Campground is located close to the most scenic cliffs. However it does require a two mile hike in.

So, if you are camping with a paddle board you need to make three hikes in. One for your camping gear, then hike back to your vehicle and one more for your paddle board. The two mile hike was muddy and slippery. So, to SUP camp here you will log in six hiking miles on your first day and six more on your last day.

The spectacular beauty of the Pictured Rocks can only truly be enjoyed in person. And paddling in front of the cliffs offers a unique, unforgettable experience.

Weather on Lake Superior can change very quickly. This can easily become a dangerous paddle. Every year kayakers are pinned against the rocks by wind and waves and must be rescued. A paddle board is more dangerous than a kayak on Lake Superior. Paddle boarding Pictured Rocks is a serious endeavor.

Paddleboarding Pictured Rocks is a serious endeavor. Lake Superior is wild, unpredictable and unforgiving. Dangerous winds move in quickly and without warning.

Bring a NOAA weather radio. Start out the day paddling into the wind. Constantly monitor the wind, wave and weather conditions as you paddle. Turn back quickly if the weather begins to get rough. Make sure someone knows when you are paddling and when you will be back.

When paddle boarding start out the day paddling into the wind
