Mid-Continent Rift Rock Reef -Lake Superior [video] SUP Touring

SUP Touring Ancient Mid-Continent Rift Rocks at Horseshoe Harbor/Keweenaw Peninsula/Lake Superior

The Tip of the Peninsula

Horseshoe Harbor is a remote tiny harbor located near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, just east of the tiny resort town Copper Harbor.

Horseshoe Harbor is part of the protected Mary Macdonald Nature Preserve. The entrance is a few miles down a two track gravel road off US 41. Then from the parking lot you need to take a short hike to get to the water.

Once you reach the pebble beach you can hike over rock formations called stromatolites. Formed millions of years ago, these unique rock formations are actually fossilized remains of an ancient algae.

If you bring a paddle board you can explore these rock formations by water. The rock stacks in the video are an easy paddle at the mouth of the small harbor. A great location to eat lunch, explore and have fun. You can also paddle east and west along the lake superior coast and enjoy more stromatolite rock formations.

Another video where I explore just south of the harbor
