Better Sleep when SUP Camping – Supplements I Use

Supplements That Have Improved My Sleep When SUP Camping

Getting good, deep sleep when backcountry camping can be a challenge. Sleeping on the ground, outdoors in the wild with critters running around… I always found it difficult to get a good nights sleep. The first night was the worst.

And then after 3 nights with marginal sleep I would be so tired on the fourth night that my body would override my mind and I would crash into a deep sleep.

But thankfully it’s not that bad anymore. One thing that helped was taking supplements that naturally support a good nights sleep. I use Magnesium, Ashwagandha and Collagen to sleep better when camping. And they work so well I now take them even when sleeping at home in my own bed.

Everybody is different when it comes to diet and supplements. So what works for me may, or may not, work for you. But these three supplements continue to work very well for me.

A good nights sleep will make the entire camping trip more enjoyable.

Study-Proven Sleep Aids That Work For Me [With Studies]:

1. Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is an important mineral that is involved in over 400 enzyme functions within the body. It has been reported that 60% of Americans are deficient in this key nutrient. Magnesium plays a major role in muscles relaxation. It also functions as an electrolyte, it helps control your body’s stress response system, and It helps maintain healthy levels of GABA which is a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep. Since most people are deficient in magnesium this is a supplement you might need to take awhile before you see results. A number of studies on both humans and mice show evidence that magnesium improves sleep. Don’t take my word for it. Check out these studies for yourself. Study , Study , Study

2. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a herbal supplement popular in Indian herbal medicine. This herb (root powder or extract) works well for me. I definitely sleep deeper and wake up feeling refreshed when taking Ashwagandha. This herb is involved with the sleep inducing neurotransmitter GABA. It also reduces the stress hormone cortisol. While there are not as many studies as with magnesium there is still science-based evidence Ashwagandha improves sleep. Study , Study , Study

3. Collagen, Gelatin or Glycine

Gelatin is a food ingredient made from the collagen or connective tissues of animals. And of course gelatin is the primary ingredient of Jello desert. How does gelatin help you sleep? Gelatin or collagen is super rich in the amino acid glycine. Glycine has a number of potent health benefits. And it acts as a sedative neurotransmitter promoting a calm mind, relaxation and better sleep. I take a collagen powder but you can take the amino acid glycine by itself too. Here are some studies on glycine and better sleep. Study , Study , Study
